Winter in Dospat
Winter in the mountains is always interesting, beautiful and a little scary, especially for those unprepared for it. People in the Rhodope Mountains have been preparing for winter since the end of summer, gathering, they cut and split wood, they clean the chimneys, prepare winter food – the nutritional one “langur”- cranberry drink – resembling non-alcoholic wine, blackberry and raspberry compote, wild strawberry jam and jars of honey. Winter is the time to rest, gatherings and sit-ins.
In the colder winters, the Dospat dam freezes and it is possible to practice hole fishing or cross-country skiing on the ice.
In folk beliefs, thick snow is a prerequisite for great coma and prosperity
